Got my new 180 but wanted to put it in a corner with a filter in that corner. Is it easy to maintain and access?

Also how often should I clean the individual sponges and what do I do when they need replacing?

Thanks

depending on the amount of fish in the tank but i would go for once aweek rinse and replace with the cleaned out filters dont forget in side the prop as well . i also have a 180 but use an external filter

in my juwel internali rinse the sponges and noodles once a month in tank water and replace the floss once a fortnight - if it's dirty in a week it's done once a week
if you want to stock a bit more than the normal amount for the tank either add another internal or an external filter

Floss gets replaced weekly in my 400, however, the other sponges, Ive yet to change or even look at in 5 months! I dont use the carbon sponge at all, the others shouldnt ever really need replacing until they are falling apart and this could take some years.

thats great thanks.

what will happen when the sponge needs replacing? Can I fit a new one in with the old for a week or so when changing over?

My sponges are at least 2 years old as the tank is second habd and the previous owner said he had it for over 2 years - i've had it 8 months and they are the original sponges in there

when i removed the carbon sponge ( i never used the thing) i added ceramic noodle to the filter

And how does the carbon filter work? It seems people don't use it???

carbon isnt necessary really, it is the black sponge, it just removes chemicals from the water, such as the leechings of bogwood, med's and plant fert's.... if i were you i wouldnt use it....

i just use mine when i want to get rid of the bogwood leachings every so often or after a fish has recovered from the meds, it just clears it really, part of chemical filtration

carbons no good for me cos i add IDA's to the tank to make the water black water lol

I replace the white pad each week (some people manage to rinse them and put them back) and rinse the other sponges (in tank water) when they look mucky. Never rinse more than one sponge per week as you will lose too many beneficial bacteria. Once a fortnight I take the impellor out and clean the filter, again in tank water. :) PS I have had my tank for 3 years and the sponges are still going strong. I also run carbon all the time, I know a lot of people don't like to.
