I know it will differ from betta to betta but even just some examples of your personal experiences with bettas and flaring would be helpful :)

Mine hasn't yet and I'm wondering when it will/should.

Disco - pretty much never, not even with females in with him.
Diesel - if it moves it needs flaring at, and then probably if it doesn't move too.
Kofi - will flare if provoked.
Nero - will flare if there's something worth flaring at (ie Diesel or his own reflection).

My Vt (The Red Baron) that i've had for a year flares at the corys, girls and snails for no aparent reason hes just a bully.

Dijon, my CT loves just flaring at the girls.

Other than that i'm only just getting into keeping bettas.

I think on there own its all down to personality, unless you stick a mirror in front of them

Depends on the betta hon, my boys generally are fairly laid back, Calcifer only flares at the colour black and the others only between the dividers when particuarly frisky.

of my three bettas:

#1 (male) only flaired right after I moved him from his 2-gallon to 3-gallon filtered tank. He swam up, flaired at me and then swam off. Then he ignored me for two days before becoming my buddy again.
#2 (female) only flaired after I held up a cup containing another female betta that I had hoped to put into the same tank. Ended up returning that other female.
#3 (male) has never flaired. He's kind of shy.

Thank you everybody :)

I think Milo might be the shy or passive kind, he wasn't bothered by the mirror he just kind of looked at me like "yeah, so what? Do you think I'm stupid?" :p

My boys:

Sparkles- 5-6 year old grumpy VT- Flares at everything and anything.

Zues- Young Super Delta- Only ever seen him flare 2 times I think at his reflection. He was SOOO beautiful- Wont even flare for the Mirror :(

Pandora-Young Cambodian Delta- Ive only had for a few weeks and will flare only at the mirror

Tika- Young Crowntail- Ive only had for a few weeks but doesn't flare expect when peeking through the front of the divider at Pandora.

They can't see eachother through the divider only in the small space at the front and back because its black otherwise they would be flaring all day I would imagine.

No your not stupid lol! My boy doesnt flare at a mirror ither but he isnt well so that might be why. In my 10 girls sority though i have 2 girls who flare at anything in their path, its all to do with the betta. Some never flare where as others do it all the time.
:good:

I'll just have to wait and see then :)

At the minute if I go near the tank he just shoots away, although he did sit and watch me doing some work yesterday :) (his tank's on my desk)

Tetris very very rarey flares, ony seen him do it once! That was the first time I fed him pellets, he was less than impressed!

My red VT is an angry soul, he flares at everything, especially Luke!! and last night a empty Nik-Nak bag got him all in a tizz as it was next to his tank.
My pink & blue VT is old & very laid back & never flares.
My CT is very nosy but very friendly and will only flare at a mirror or his reflection.
The girls are a moody bunch & flare all the time at each other.

Just_Another_One - what kind of set up does Sparkles have? Has he always had the same or can you explain his progression (if you've moved him around at all)? Thanks.

i have mine in a 20 g long community and he was a little timid at first. after a couple days i showed him the mirror and he flared and followed for minutes. hes more comfortable now and he seems to be settlin down. haha sometimes i catch him flarin at the back wall of the tank.. he must see his reflection in the glass or somethin.

I hear the flarin is good for them though, despite what most people think. It releases endorphins and will release stress... as long as you don't make them flare too often. Its just like what most boxers say, they're only nervous until the first hit.

I suppose bettas must flare every now and hten just to stretch out their fins, abit like guppies sometimes bend their gonopodiums forward [another word for dic*]
