I've read that offering different types of foods helps encourage breeding, but am I supposed to feed them more? I have (I think) 1 pregnant female, 2 non-pregnant females, and 1 male. I've been feeding the a little bit once a day, switching between 2 types of flakes, bloodworms, and shrimp pellets. I also just picked up Spirulina to give to them. I'm just supposed to give more TYPES of food, not actually more food, right? Don't wanna overfeed and send the stats all crazy!

Well, nevermind, we've got babies over here!!!! About 45 fry (hard to count the little guys!) I just got these Balloon Mollies 3 or 4 days ago, and all the females looked pretty large, but they are balloon mollies, so I wasn't sure if they were pregnant or not. Yesterday, I fed them some Spirulina for the first time, I came back 20 minutes later, and there were fry swimming around!

you will find that mollies are very easy to breed.
i have got rid of close to 100 frys and adults because i just can't stop them breeding.

Is it ok to just keep female mollies in a tank? Is it ok to just keep male mollies in a tank? I know if you have males you need several females to each male, but is it alright to ONLY keep females? If it is, then most likely what I will do, is get another big tank and fill it with female mollies, and just keep a few male mollies in another tank, so they won't continue to breed like crazy. I know they store sperm, so they can still be pregnant long after being removed from the males, but this would at least be a start to keeping the population down! Any advice?

i have kept 2 female mollies in my tank (the rest went to my lfs) but find them chasing each other every now and then.
depends on the personality of the fish, maybe.

Well, I've started talking one of my friends into having fish. He's an animal lover as well, and would make a great fish owner imo. I made him an offer he can't refuse, I said I would give him a filter setup I have, and free fish, so all he needs is a tank, hood and light, some gravel and some plants. The filter is currently running, so a fishless cycle will be not too bad in his new tank. I had a 10 gallon that I set up with an old filter, old gravel, and used Bio-Spira, and the tank was cycled in about a week, so hopefully we can get him up and running fairly quickly. Luckily, I have a long time before these Molly babies will be ready to go anywhere.

you will be surprised.
they grow so fast as well.
Really? In the fish index it says they won't reach a sellable age for like 6-8 months. I just thought that meant I also couldn't give them to my friend for that long as well. Does it take less than that for them to grow up?

it probably just a recommendation but i am not an expert.
what i have written here are from my own experience and observation.
i have given away my frys to my lfs at less than 2 montsh old.

hi,
you mention you are giving your friend a gift, of a filter and some fish when he gets a tank,
can you run this filter in your main tank? if so he wont need to cycle it will be cloned off yours.
some fish take a while to show what sex they are so if you wanted to keep some boys or girls you may have to wait for up to 3-4months, donna :)

Yes, the filter is currently running in a tank right now, so he should be all set.

I'm not sure if he cares about the sex of them, I will have to ask. How big do they have to be to be in the tank with the adult mollies without getting eaten?

Also... Some of the fry are long and skinny, while others are short and fat, I know that Ballon's and regular Mollie's can breed together, do the fry actually look different when they are only a day old? Because, I swear some of them look like little balloons, and others are longer more like the regular mollies.

hello,
usualy fry have to be big enough to not fit in to anyones mouth,
it is possable to tell day old platys from mollys and guppy ,so you could be right about them looking different, after all they are a very different shape  .
hope your friend likes his new hobby when he gets the tank, maybe he will become a tff member :good: .
donna :)

Oh no! No way! He is going to become a member BEFORE he gets his tank! That's the rules, I'm gonna test him on his stuff, see if he's done his homework! LOL! :good:
