I know the glass is tempered to make it stronger, but how much weight do you think it can hold? I have about 33 pounds of slate, I wanna put most of it in if i can, you think it will support the weight?

What size is the tank? obviously you would get on better putting 33lbs of slate in a 50gal rather than a 5 gal!

Oh, oops, forget... 55 gallon.. but I'm only gonna be putting slate on one half...

Glass can hold a lot, especially tempered glass. To be on the safe side though, try to make it as evenly distributed as possible.

You shouldn't have any problem with that. Since most of the weight (substrate & water) is evenly divided, there isn't a terrible strain on the glass. Even if you stacked quite a bit of it up in one place, you should be fine. Most of the time, stuff like that is put toward a corner or back of the tank which helps further since the edges are stronger than the center of the glass.

Hi I work in a glass factory an one of my jobs is tempering glass. Just a little tip. The weakest point of tempered glass is at it's corners. Try not to knock these. I'm am in no way trying to alarm you or put you off. I am just saying "be careful" when moving or re-positioning your tank.

Put some eggcrate material under the gravel first, add gravel then rocks. This prevents the weight of all the rocks from being concentrated on one pin point area, which could cause problems.

I've seen aquariums loaded with more rock than water using this method. Eggcrate can be found in the lighting department of hardware or diy shops.

No problem at all, I have about 45KG of slate pilled up at one end in my 50G and have never had any problems. The glass is designed to hold alot of weight, and has to be able to withstand more pressure than just the water contents would create.

I wouldnt worry about it!

Yeah, I have sand in my tank.
The egg-crate idea is a great idea, but from Bunji's post, I'm just gonna pile the stuff in. Should be fine. (famous last words)

Good luck mate, and dont be scared to post photos for us ;)

The weight won't be a problem, but you may develope a problem if you stack it up and a piece falls. Just make sure you stack it up solid and you won't have any problems.

The only problem would be if the weight is focused on one point. so long as the load is evenly distributed (via sand or eggcrate etc) then the glass will take a hell of a lot of weight.
