So thanks to the great advice I've gotten here, my little 5.5 gallon tank is almost if not fully cycled. I had a small amount of ammonia yesterday morning, did a 2 gallon water change, and got 0 ammonia, 0 nitrate, 0 nitrite last night. Same this morning. Same this evening. I'll continue testing morning and night and doing water changes as needed. I have 2 happy glofish, 1 peppy leopard danio, and 2 golden apple snails that seem to be getting might big.
Now, I have a larger (54 gallon) tank which I have sitting empty and haven't begun the cycle yet. I was going to do a fishless cycle, but I couldn't find any non-scented ammonia, so I ordered some ammonium chloride drops and am waiting for them to arrive along with the biomedia and substrate/gravel for the new tank. So how much mature media do I need to put in the new tank when cycling it to be effective? I don't want to take too much of the bacteria out of the little tank and throw off its balance. It's just a small filter in the 5.5 gallon tank. Would I be better of going to a fish store and getting some and not risking unbalancing my little tank?
THanks!
