Alright, I'll be keeping some guppies in a 5 gallon tank, and I want to keep the diseases away so I'm considering adding a little bit of marine salf to make the water just slightly brackish. My ph is just around 7.1 and I was wondering just how much salt I should add? Like how many teaspoons or tablespoons?

There's no need to add salt prophylactically. if you're fishes are fine and healthy, then leave out the salt.

Guppies can be adapted to anything from freshwater to fully marine, so the exact dosage doesn't matter. If you were keeping them with, say, mollies, then adding around 3-5 grammes of salt per litre is adequate to create lightly brackish conditions. This will get you a specific gravity of about 1.002 to 1.004. Use a hydrometer to keep tabs on the specific gravity. Weight salt, or measuring it by the spoonful, isn't at all reliable because open boxes of salt absorb water, making such measurements totally inaccurate.

Cheers,

Neale
