How Much Gravel?

How do you guys go about figuring out how much gravel you need?

Lets say its a 50 gallon tank, and the bags of gravel are 5lbs, how do you know how many to buy, and how thick should teh bottom be?

should it be about 5cm about 2inchs thick?

use tankmaster(see sig)
click aquarium analyzer
put in your desired sand bed depth (works for gravel too)
and it will work out the weight of the substrate

If you will have live plants then a couple inches is recommended. If not, I'd say keep it shallow, 1/2" or less.
