Hi.

My new tank has a bottom surface area of 122cm by 29.5cm. Is there a guidline to how much gravel you should have at the bottom of the tank. Im not using an under gravel filter for this one.

Im hopeing to have plants in my tank, will the gravel be OK, or should I put some soil inderneath the gravel? All advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I just put in any amount I want...its different in all my tanks. But you probably shouldn't go over a certain amount, not too sure what it would be though. Since your planting I'm sure there would be a guidline for that...anyways, just wanted to point out that this belongs in the Tropical Chit Chat section, as its not an emergency (or is it? LoL).

Hi, thanks for that. Sorry for posting in the wrong area, I thought I was in begginers questions, no wander I could not find my topic.

Cheers

i think it is about 1.5-2 inches.. if you want to have a lot of plants in there (depending on the type of gravel), you may want to add some laterite.

hope that helps!

kat :)

Try asking about in the planted section, someone should be able to help you there with regards the anything else you could add to benefit your plants.

Hi Dylan :)

A good rule of thumb might be to use about a pound of gravel per gallon of water, and for sand, keep it no more than an inch deep.

I'll move your thread to the Beginners forum. :D
