I want to change the gravel whilst my fishless cycle is still in progress but am unsure how much to buy. I will be getting plain black gravel

Many Thanks

YOU SHOULDNT REALLY CHANGE YOUR GRAVEL WHILE IT IS CYCLING BECAUSE YOU WILL KILL THE BACTERIA IN YOUR GRAVEL

I did consider that but thought it was best to do it now while I could keep adding ammonia rather than wait till I have fish and potentially harm them with a mini cycle. If I hang some of the old gravel in stockings for a week or so would this stop my cycle completely stalling?

Hanging some old gravel will help keep some of your old bacteria in the tank, but honestly it shouldn't make too much difference either way. The lion's share of the bacteria live in the filter, so while you're killing everything in the gravel, you're not completely stalling your cycle.

I also agree with you that if you're going to do something that'll damage the biofilter, during the fishless cycle is the time to do it.

As you can see im a newbie and i wudnt be to sure about using new gravel in a stocking but gravel from an established tank is great

if you can hold on a while someone with more experience may come along and advise you better than i can
