I was just wondering... I have 735 GPH, in a 20 gallon, that's 36.75 times my volume. I doubt most people will have under 5x or over 60x.

My 37 gallon cube has about 30x, soon to be about 35 ( as soon as the new power head arrives in the mail.)

it all really depends on what type of tank u have for flow. For example when i get my lionfish i wont have huge powerheads as lions are lazy fish. maxijets are by far the best but aquaclears arent too far behind.

about flow, I was just wondering, because I have nothing better to do. I know that different setups and different people will change the results. I just thought it would be interesting to see the average flow rate.

The amount of flow is important, especially in a reef tank. The amount of flow is important up to a point, then you have to take into account the types of fish you are keeping (are they lazy swimmers preferable to slow water movement, or schooling fish that love fast current...for example) Then once you have taken that into account you have to look at alternating currents. Alternating currents are not just for asthetically pleasing set ups, but in order to achieve coral growth that would mimmic that of the natural ocean, many corals need a current that switches direction, sounds funny, but there have been studies done recently about this that strongly support this. This is why a simple wave timer can greatly benefit a reef tank.
