hey all.

have noticed today that four of my 7 juvenile panda cory's (about 1" long currently) have what i believe is a swollen stomach from unintentional overfeeding. its a small dark swelling on the underside in line with the pectoral fins which is where i thought the stomach was. does this sound like a correct diagnosis?

to that end.. how much and how often do you cory owners feed them? i use hikari catfish wafers, jmc catfish pellets and the occasional hikari algae wafer specifically for the catfish but they also hoover up a combination of bloodworm, tetra flake and hikari mini granules that is missed by other fish. with reference to the wafers and jmc pellets how many would you guys feed per catfish/in a tank of 7 juvenile pandas and a fully grown bronze and peppered?

i know this should be a basic understanding of mine but i became unfortunately disconnected with the hobby for four years while at university and its been a while since i have verified how much they SHOULD eat as they seem never to stop if there's food going

Cheers for any replies!

I am not an expert in fish nutrition but I wouldn't have thought that corys, or any other fish, would overeat to the point of getting swollen. In my tank I have many different types and sizes of fish and there is no way I could control the amount of food each species gets and only feed enough for all the occupants of the tank. I feed at different times with different media of food so as to provide for everyone. My clown loaches will start by eating larger types of food like catfish pellets while the smaller fish, like my corys and my khuli loaches will feed on the particles that come off the catfish pellets and so on with all the different feeds I give.

With a single species it would be much easier. I believe a general rule for smaller fish is to put enough in the tank, three times a day, that would, in size, be equal to the size to the total number of the fishes eyes. So what I mean is if your fish had eyes 2mm in diameter and you had seven fish then you would feed, say, a flake food that was equivalent to the area of 14 fish eyes, or 43 sq mm equivalent to a piece of flake of side 6.5mm approx.

In other words, not much

Whether or not the above has any credence I don't know but so long as you don't put so much food in that you pollute the water then the fish will eat what they want and leave the rest.

If your fish have swollen stomachs I would ask for help on that subject as I think it unlikely to have been caused by over-eating.

I currently only own one peppered catfish and I feed her one algae wafer and a sprinkle of flakes (that sink to the bottom) every other day. For a special treat sometimes she gets a couple of peas or a cube of cucumber. She seems very healthy and happy

I feed live or frozen food 4-5 times a week & catfish pellets, & they hoover up anything the other fish leave, I don't have a starve day.
It's possible those four are females as they are chunkier than the males, can you get a pic?
