i have a 120litre tank, im thinking of neon tetra's and some guppys, i want a fairly big shoal of neons, how many should i nstock in the tank, would 15 be too many neons?

I'm by no way an expert but as long as your filtration is good and nicely cycled you could get quite a few more than that. I had 25 in a 170lt along with dozens of other fish.

If you’re not cycled don't add tetras yet, there not the hardiest of fish, the general opinion you'll get is to buy some ammonia and do a fishless cycle see here Fishless Cycle

I would have thought once fully established you could get a good 25-30 in there. Of course you also have to consider the tank measurements too........

Like I said I’m no expert!

EDIT:- Beaten, forgot about the guppies, and probably advised too many!!!!!!!!! I'll get my coat.

Hi and welcome to TFF,

In regards to your Q : it depends. 120L is enough to house 15 neons, but neons are particularly sensitive.

So has your tank finished cycling? if so then you can start adding fish gradually.

or

if you've managed to get some mature media to kick start your tank, then it might be possible to add all 15 at once (depending on the previous tank the media came from)

Now if you're still cycling, even though it is tempting, I wouldn't put any fish in the tank. Liek I said neons are sensitive and guppies are prone to disease due to inbreeding (which bad water quality would probably kick start a disease to affect your fish)

If you don't mind, could you please post your water stats, as this would be a help in determining where in the cycling stage you have got to?

Good luck :good:

*EDIT* damn! tackle beat me to it lol :p

i wasnt aware about the cycling as mentioned, i set up the tank sunday and have plants in there and have let the filter run.

tribe, where in wilts you from as im from wilts too!!

I'm in Calne lol. If you haven't cycled you're tank yet, I would suggest doing so. What filter(s) are you running? If you're running an internal tetra tec, I'll be able to give you some mature media to kick start your tank.

im in malmesbury!!! i am running a ferplast bluwave05 (came with the tank)

I'm not sure if that would take tetra filter pads :/ The best way you cycle a tank, as we've previously said is a fishless cycle. It takes a while, but it's worth it.

Here's a very useful thread:
Fishless cycling

is somewhere like pets at home likely to sell pure bottled ammonia or whitehall? or blooms?

I would have thought Whitehall garden centre would have it, but please please do not buy any fish from there.

I'm not having a *****, but when I started out, I always got my fish from there only to have them die. They run their tanks of a central filtration system and infection and diseases are always present when ever I go there. The staff seem to have little regard to the fish they keep.

Yeah...whitehall isnt too good. I saw a ray there and it was about 6" and i asked if it would grow much larger, and they said no.

At least i think that was Whitehall... Is that anywhere near Lackham?
