How Many Vals?

Hi all -- planning my planted tank and wanting to use Vallisneria Spiralis or Nana for my background plant. The hardest thing I'm finding is knowing how many to get. I need to fill an area that is about 2" x 12" -- not sure how far apart to plant which obviously means not sure how many I need. Thanks!
