I know the answer to this question is going to vary depending on a lot of parameters, but generally speaking, how many plants does it take to fill a 55 gallon?

I know different plants have a different width, and it depends on how heavily planted you want your tank, but let's take your average beginner plants, and a medium density, roughly how many plants would you use?

Ok, what about spacing between plants?

well it depends what look you are looking for

eg small plants 8 and large plants 4 might look like a jungle

( im goin to my LFS 2moz to get some plants to make a jungle like area :) )

ok, thanks.

anybody else wanna add their suggestion?

If this is a new planted setup useing 2 WPG or more of light you want to at least cover 50% of the substrate with fast growing stem plants, somewhere nearer 70% would be even better, you want to outcompete the algae from the start for the available nutrients, and the way to do this is add lots of fast growing plants in the beginning, this will also help your tank to reach a balance quicker, new tanks all experience nuscience algae in the beginning but if you do the above you will keep this to a minimum. You can remove the faster growing plants after a couple of months and begin to add the plants you really want.
