I want to put in some black phantom tetras and panda corys. how many can I have of each in a 10 US gallon tank? I know they like to be kept in groups.
Thanks!

**edited for spelling**

As you say, both of these fish enjoy the company of others of their species. I'd say around 6 of the tetras and 4 of the corys would meet the minimum # of fish for fish comfort and the maximum # of fish for the tank size. Good filtration is a must though.

What kind of filter do you have on the tank and is it cycled yet?

Both of these species appreciate planted tanks as well, if you can manage it...

Good luck!

my tank is fully cycled, and right now I have a whisper in tank 10i or somehting liek that. it is not my favorite, but i am just keeping it in that tank until I get a better one.

Cool. Did you fishless cycle?

The Whisper 10i is a bit on the light side, but you should be ok in the short term. As a strong proponent of overfiltration, I would definitely consider an upgrade at some point if you can. The Aquaclear 150 or Penguin 125 would be a good place to start your research.

Great choices in fish, btw. I'm sure you will enjoy them!

Black phantom tetras are cool. I almost wish I had gone with a predominantly tetra tank (can't forget the cats ;) )

FYI: they tend to loose the depth of black as they mature their fins turn more grey

I realized that about the filter with my last fish.
I did fishless cycle, it took about a month and a half, and I used ammonia with no filter media/gravel from an established tank.
Thank you for the filter recs.
kevin... that seems like a lot of fish in a 10gallon tank, I am thinking of sticking within the 6/4 ratio.

kerryk: thank you for the info. my bf picked out the black phantoms because he just fell in love with them. I can't wait to go pick up some.

I figured I would do a few at a time, instead of all in one shot. it would be easier on the bioload.

since pandas stay small snd dont produce alot of waste, i'll go with 6/6 but w/e u want

I'd tend to agree with kevin-- particularly if the tank is planted. If not planted . . . er, 6/4 would be safer . . .

for the record i have 6 pandas in a 15g tank, I wouldn't be too happy about putting that many in a 10 just cos of space issues. -_- 6 tetras 4 cories sounds ok though, in fact its nearly exactly what I have. the black phantoms are great fun, the males do cool territory display things. :D

i never said they produced a lot of bioload

i said i dont like to overcrowd tehm, ie not enough floor space for tehm to run round in

intriguingly enough, i'm on another fish forum where people constantly whine about how much bioload cories produce and how you should understock your tank if you're keeping them...anyone got any hard evidence?

i think plecs do, not cories,

i never said you said corie produce alot of bioload

anyways i said what i would do, you dont have to but atleast you will know that 6 cories can yes indded fit in a 10 gallon, especially pandas

Depending on the dimensions of the tank a 10g can hold much more than just 10" of fish, with a 18x12x12" tank working on the surface area to fish ratio of 10 square inches of surface/1 inch of fish you can stock 21 inches of fish provided adequate filtration is used. IMO this is pushing it a bit far but the tank could easily hold 6 small tetras and 4 panda Corydoras.
