HI there

How many fry could I manage to raise in a 10 gallon tank? It has heater and sponge filter in, but the fry tank I have at the moment has about 15 molly fry in and 2 platy fry, but my speckled molly decided to drop early this morning, so now have some more babies, I managed to catch about 15 but then had to go to work, found 1 more when I got home, would that be too many fry in a tank....say about 32? Obviously do not want to stunt their growth at all, the new babies are in a biggish breeder net at the moment....

Can anyone help?

Debbie

initially that would be enough room but would soon not be enough room. maybe 2 weeks time.

OK....damn it.....I dare not get another tank, i have 6 already....how long could I keep them in a breeder net for? Could I perhaps split the new babies into say a couple of breeder nets?

I need a solution...lol...!

Gosh I am all excited....although it doesn't take much to excite me...lol

I have about 30 babies in a 15l atm. I have no where to put the until the weekend >.> Just do regular water changes like 50% daily at least. I know we do 2 x 50% daily, it keeps everything fresh.

Also remove any uneaten food after 10 minutes or so.

you cant keep them long in small housing conditions without effectingthem, keep whatever you want to and either sell/give the others away. or use as feeders if you are that way inclined. which most people arn't

No flaming me for "or use as feeders if you are that way inclined. which most people arn't" :)

Well working on the 1" per gallon rule i suppose your right. At 1/2cm per fish it only takes 15 fish to fill a 3 gallon. I have mine filtered with a fluval 1 and a sponge filter. Maybe i should get a bigger tank for them... its only temp as im setting up a 2.5ft for fry very very soon.

If i put a fluval 1 and a sponge filter in a 2.5ft that wouldnt filter enough at all would it >.<

i was not judging you in anyway. if you can keep the water parameters ok then you can keep more fish in less space.

I doubt very much if a fluval 1 has enough through put, i belive they are up to 40litres filters.

i had over 100 fry in my 10G tank, i just removed the bigger ones once they was a decent size and i either put them in my other tanks or i sold them to lfs.

Ooohhh no I cannot feed them to my other fish, I am very maternal ya know...lol...do understand it has to be done though sometimes, mine must of had a right feed today as I said, when I left for work I saw a load more babies, but do not think my boss would of gone for the excuse, 'sorry I am late, was catching baby fish'..lol. Thanks for the reply.

Ok well I do a water change everyday in my fry tank, so I shall carry on doing that!

Thanks for the help!

Ok great....I shall move them later on tonight, gosh I forgot how small they are when they are first born...they are so cute...!

Thanks for the info

hia debbie.they will be fine as 5teady said, mine are only just now making the tank look busy and still they would have had plenty of room in there i only moved them into a larger one as i didnt have the hood for the small one( found it now!!), but of course if they are big enough put them in the big tank, they will prob be chuffed to see some new faces :)
( you are 1 of at least 3 people i know on here that go soppy over baby fish lol--- u know who i mean pmsl)

shelagh xxxxxxxxxx

Yup, Steady and Shelagh are right.

I have seen a very experienced breeder raise a school of fish in an 8x6x6 with no problems. No filtration just live food and twice daily, drastic, water changes; it can be done but it is hard work.

Don't put an oversized filter into a tank of fry; if you are worried that you don't have enough filtration then either increase the water changes or buy another small filter.

OK well am doing a water change everyday....and have been for the last 3 weeks, filtration is not too strong, and I do vac the tank out also, have put the new fry in tonight and they seem fine, looks great now with loads more babies swimming about...cannot believe though how big my platy fry have got, they are bigger than the molly fry who are just over three week old, platy fry are 2 week old then the lickle babies who are 2 days old...and even the bigger of the molly fry is no comparision to the platy fry, I thought with the platy being a much smaller fish than the molly that the molly fry would grow quicker!
