Hi guys,

I am a newbie and have a month old tank with the following inhabitants;

1 silver shark
3 Tiger Barbs
3 Green Tiger Barbs
2 Dalmation Mollies
1 Platy

I have a 200 litre tank and was wondering if anyone could advise on max capacity for my tank as dont want to overcrowd my fishies but keep resding conflicting info on this subject.....lovin my fish so far !!!!

hi there, if you look in my sig theres a link which gives details on how to work out how many fish you can have and what species are compatible. it doesn't do the work for you but it explains how to work it out for yourself!! :nod:

the general guideline used is 1" of fish per gallon of water. 200l is around 55 gallons so you can have 55" of fish in total, you need to work it out on the max adult size of the fish. there's a lot of exceptions to the rule but it gives a rough idea.

what you have at the moment is

1 silver shark - 12" (I'm not kidding, these guys get massive, they should also be kept in a group, your tank may not be big enough to house this fish long term)
3 Tiger Barbs - 6"
3 Green Tiger Barbs - 6"
2 Dalmation Mollies - 6"
1 Platy - 2"

so that's 32" of fish, you can keep another 23" or there abouts. most of that space is taken up with the shark though so i'd recommend you take him back to the fish shop, this will then give you lots of room to play with!

Miss Wiggle thank you for taking time to reply in this way, its really helpful....hmmm....helpful and supposedly knowledgeable guy in lfs recommended the tiger shark but i did wonder if he would grow too big and also he seems to stare at his reflection a lot and i get the feeling he needs a buddy . . . hmm.......
