hi my tank is 36" height is 19" width is 13"
i have in it
4 harlequin
2 hatchet
3 neons
2 clown loach
2 cory
1 tiger barb
1 firemouth
2 danios
how many more can i get in without overstocking
i was told about 30

As your tank is around 30 UK Gallons you could keep 30 fish - assuming all where 1" long. The very very rough rule is 1" of fish per gallon of water - but this isn't the best rule to go by as it doesn't take into account the speed of the fish (faster fish need more room), the differing depth levels prefered by fish (eg corys like the bottom and so do loaches - with loachs being big fish the room at the bottom will soon be cramped) etc.

All in all I'd not go as high as 30 personally...

ok thanks most fish i have are bottom feeders i dont really have any top feeders or any middle feeders but all advice taken thanks

You're for sure a bit overstocked and a bit mismatched in your stocking. Alot of the fish you have need to be in shoals/schools. You should ideally up your number of danios, neons, cories and especially tiger barbs up to groups of 6. This would put you at being stocked. Danios, neons and cories don't show there true personality unless they are in a larger shoal - they tend to be nervous when they are in too small of a group. as for tiger barbs, they are very nippy/slightly aggressive but if you keep them in a large shoal, they tend to keep the aggression amongst themselves as opposed to directing it at other fish.
Hatchets are kind of spaz fish so you need to be very careful with them! They can and will jump out of the tank! And although your clown loaches are small now and they are slow growers, they get way to big for your tank.
You should get rid of a few of your fish and up the schools to a few others and that would put you at about stocked. 30 fish in a 30 gallon tank is NOT correct unless all of these fish are approx. 1" - you have fish that are much bigger than that.

Breeze, I suspect he got told 30 without the essential fact that it meant 30inches of fish ;)

ok cheers what fish would you recomend i get rid of and who do i give them too i dont know anybody else with tropical fish

The one inch of fish per gallon rule is a no-no. You have to take account the mass and/or of the fish too. Imagine puting in five 10-inch fish in a 50 gallon, its wayyy overkill. But if you have 50 1-inchneon tetras in a 50-gallon it would be ok. Also take account what filters you have, how many, and how often you maintain your tank. Overcrowding can also mean not enough beneficial bacteria in the tank and not enough swimming space. We can only give you a very, very rough estimate on how many fish you can put in there.

Ali - most LFS's will take your fish off your hands and give you a small in-store credit for them. You will just have to check around and see which ones do and which ones don't. I personally - and this is just IMO only would get rid of the angels, hatchets, firemouth, and clowns and possibly the tiger barb if you don't plan on adding more of them. You can then do some research about fish that will work good for your tank and up the numbers of the fish you have left. Clown loaches are very cool, but just get too big, there are some smaller species of loaches that you may like and will fit better into your aquarium. HTH!

Ah, sorry about the he/she - I just tend to type he regardless ;)
