Setting up a community tank with 3 pearl gouramis and a few other species, corrys, plec etc

im goin to have 2 female and 1 male, but how many rams?

Are female and males easy to tell?
If it is bolivian rams they are hard to sex when they are young , I have 2 males , at the shop I was told they only get males because "females are bland" , I have looked at various websites and for what I can tell the males have longer spikes at the front of the dorsal fin , the front 2 are longer. I have only had the tank seven weeks so very new to the hobby. Think the males have larger fins and tale and a bit more red on them.
Hope this helps a bit , 2 males can be fine , don't make the same mistake I did and add a third , WWIII ....

the most accurate way IME is:

males have pointed anal fins which pass the base of the tail
females have rounder anal fins which dont pass the base of the tail

ime the males have 'pointier' dorsal and anal fins and with most bolivian rams the males have longer points to the tail.
also with most rams the males 1st 3 dorsal fin rays extend higher than those of the females.
both of my female dutch rams anal fins pass the base of the tail so i would use the shape as more of an indicator of their sex as opposed to the length.
with rams, as with most fish species, the males will be more colourful, but it is more difficult in young fish as some only show true colours when in breeding condition or just mature.
