I have a spare 30 Litre tank and amongst other things I was thinking of using it for bettas, How many bettas could this tank (divided into two) support? I was thinking a male either side, or a male one side and two females the other or would three fish be too much? Would a male betta one side and a dwarf puffer the other work?

Edit: Making things clearer

first things first you were going to get 2 males together ???? you cant put 2 males together they will kill each other!! why dont you just get 2 male bettas different finnage each side for instance a vt and ct you can get very pretty types of vt and ct.

I agree with faithless, two males together is a definite no no. There's no reason you couldn't divide the tank and keep a Betta in each side.

No, I meant-

|=Divide
Side one | Side Two

Male | Male

Or:
Male | Two Females

Or:
Male | Dwarf Puffer

Really its a question of what to put in the other side from the male.

Sorry
I think you would be best with the Bettas instead of a Betta and a Dwarf Puffer. As far as I know DPs need at least 5 Gallons so your tank is a little small.
I'm not 100% sure on the females so hopefully someone else will be able to help you out there. :/

a male on either side could work.
two females are a nono- they're just as fiesty as males, its one, or 5+ in a 10 gallon or more (to spread aggression).

30ltrs is only 7 US gallons, divided is only 3.5 gallons either side, dwarf puffers really need 5 gallons or more, thats the recommended anyway.

so a male either side is the best option.

Thanks for the replies.

So a male either side is best. Is there room for african dwarf frogs or ghost shrimp and what stocking levels per side? If I buy / make a divider with holes to let the water through how do I prevent them flaring constantly? Do they give up after a while or will I have to block their view?

There really isn't room for anything other than the bettas. Besides, the bettas will eat the shrimp.

buy a clouded or colored devider then the two males wont flare, i personaly would go with 2 males, possabily two different tail types, females either need to be kept alone or in large groups in tanks that are big enought to provide plenty of hiding places and lots of swimming room.shrimp and frogs wouldnt add too much waste to the tank aslong as your filtering correctly, shrimps might be eaten so try one or two at first, i think 1 bette along with a few shrimp on one side and another betta and 2 ADF's on the other side.research about ADF's first as you can learn some ace tips about them on different forums and websites. i think common glass shrimp will be best, but other shrimp i would have thought would survive too, amano shrimps would work.OR you could just chose one really nice looking betta and give him whole tank maybe with a few tank mate like shrimp, frogs or even a few bottom dwellers such as pygmy corys or ottos, not sure?make sure you heat the tank too and keep up with water changes etc and it would be fine IMO

sorry about misunderstanding.
i dont know about the frogs i heard they can jump a distance and you have to have water level low. a male betta each side sounds better as you could get some very gorgues bettas. i recentley brought a betta over the internet he is lovely.
Hope you make right decision.
Good Luck.
Luke.
