How Long Is A Fish Pregnant ?

Hi my name is Lyn and iam from Liverpool.I have seven little fish,they are cold water,and have a red finn with a tiny bit of white and red tails.well we did have 5 and have for ages and then my daughter noticed two babies swimming at the top,they are big enough so the adults cant eat them.We noticed two of the fish look pregnant,well one defently is and was wondering how long she will be like this,as i dont want the others to eat the babies.I bought a breeding box to put on the side of the tank,but she looked all lonely in it,i know im soft!!and if it takes a while, i prefare her to be with the others.she looks really fat now,and do they give birth to live babies,or have eggs.one more thing,yes iam a complete novice with all this,when you see a fish with like a long thing hanging from its bum,is that fish poo or eggs,as i remember my aunties fish having this,but have never seen mine do it,thanks to anyone who can help.

im not to sure on cold water fish, maybe you would get more info on the cold water section,
