I have had my guppies for about 2 months now and she has been pregnant from day one but has never had her fry. Have introduced her to a breeding trap to protect from my pleco and other fish. Have had her in it for 2 days now and have already seen tiny fry. Dont know if they are still there tho, will they just leave when they want? Also how long should I keep her in there for? Cheers

are the fry big enough so that the other fish can't get them into their mouths?
if they are bigger than the larger fish's mouths then they can go in the main tank.

They were tiny mate, im talkin about 5mm max, could hardly see them. Was plannin on keepin them in there longer than the mother. How long should I keep her in there for? Just until I have enough fry or what? Think the fry might have escaped out the tiny holes.

the female is still in the breeding trap?
how long ago was it when she had her last fry?

She has been there for two days now. Yesterday she had two I think but they are gone, well i cant see them. They were really really small.

well she will not them all but she will eat a few, i happily rear plenty of guppies with the parents and have no problems.

Unless there is very little cover, all of the fry will almost never be eaten. People that are new, including myself when I started, tend to think they have to save all the fry or else they will be eaten. Later they are overrun with fry. As long as you get the mother out within a few hours of birthing, you will likely have plent of fry left. Good luck.

I have taken her out coz it seems like she had already had some fry before i put her in there coz she seemed to only have 2 in the space of three days. I will let her bread again and then when she looks big again ill put her in. Cheers

She doesn't have to mate again. She is still hold sperm that will develop more fry actually. She may get large really quickly at first and then slim down again. My livebearers do this.

cool cool mate but it surely aint good to keep her in there for long is it? think it would be a bit stressfull? What do you do?

No you wouldn't keep her in there until she gives birth again. Four weeks is about the time between births, but watch her size as she grows.

i know other people swear by them but i think breeding traps are generally unecessary and a little...hmmmm, how to put this...cruel. im not having a go at people who use them this is just my own opinion on them. put in HEAPS of plants. try and bunch a whole heap together so they can go right into them and hide. there are other types of nooks and crannys you can give them to hide in. sounds silly but i put a wine bottle in the tank. laying down. take the label of and soak it in hot water for a while to get rid of any nasties. my guys often head in there to hide out. one day when i went to clean the tank i had no idea i had babies in there until i tipped out the bottle into the tank and 12 fry came out :)

try and relax and enjoy it all :)

When I got my platys and mollies I was using breeding traps. They were disasters. I had four pregnancies in the traps- two fish died and the other two miscarried. I never use them anymore. I finally set up a fry tank and now I have fry. Maybe with guppies it is different but I really think they are not good for platys or mollies.

Cheers for the opinions lads. Another problem has just arisen, in the time that this forums has been going for some strange reason both of my male guppies have died. I have had the for a while, one went missing so prbably eaten whereas the other one had got stuck under my shell, think my pleco had something to do with it. I will now have to buy some more males. Two should be enough ay? Also I am having big problems keeping plants in my tank and thats why I am using the breeding trap. Cheers
