Hi

I remember reading somewhere that if you take tap water and oxygenate it in a container for a period of time the chlorine will evaporate ?

Anyone know how long this takes ?

and what about chloramine ? do we get that in our tap water and will that evaporate naturally as well ?

My water for water changes now sits in a tank with power head in at 25C (part RO and part tap water) and I'm presuming that putting water conditioner is no longer necessary if I leave the water for a couple of days before using it ?

Chlorine around 24 hours I think. Chloramine doesn't evaporate as far as I know.

It's by far safer to use something like API stress Coat to treat the water. This not only removes both of them, but also renders heavy metals harmless (and these days most of our water sit with loads of heavy metals).

Ive never seen the point in taking the effort to R/O filter water so you have lovely pure contaminant free water and then mix it with tapwater so all those contaminants are added back in, pure madness.

I'd use 100% R/O water with the trace elements and buffers added back in to your desired level, that way you dont have to worry about chlorine chloramine or heavy metals.

It's cheaper to add tap water to harden the water than RO right or equivalent. It's for a planted tank rather than a reef tank or discus tank, so it's not really the purity I'm after, just the softer water.

Hi Fishy Mad :)

Chlorine will have dissipated in a day if you aerate the water, but chloramine and heavy metals need to be removed by using a chemical. Just about any water conditioner will do, as long as it states that it removes them. Some dechlorinates only remove chlorine, so be sure to read the label. The least expensive one will work just as well as the fancy brands. :D
