i have to leave to ny THIS morning and my idiot step sister will "watch the house" im not sure how long i will be leaving for. so barring nothing is wrong with my tank (fingers crossed) how long can my buddy go without much food? he's about 5and .5 inches( i forgot to say his an oscar)

At his size, two weeks, but if someone is going to go into the house, they could put some food in every other day. Id be more concerend about how long he could go without a water change, so a few questions if I may.

How large is the tank (in litre or gallons), what filtration is running on it, how long has it been set up? How often and how much water do you change on a regular basis? What other fish and how many in the tank with him?

hes in a 40g, i usually give his gravel a once over everyday ( i like a tidy tank and i have no life ;)
hes an only fishy. hes filitation could be better im working that bit. i told her if were gonna more than 3-4 days give him a smidge. and unfortunately i set this tank up yesterday. but with the old filter and substa. how screwed is he?

added i was worryed about the water changes given how often i turn his tank over but figured less food might cap that issuse unless the worset happens and im gone more than 2 weeks

IMO I would ask someone to feed the Oscar every 3 days (even less) or so as the more they feed, the more they waste, the more ammonia/nitrates build up. If you're going for 2 weeks everything should be fine, much longer and definitely need to do a WC. Just feed bare minimum while you're away and remember 1 of the biggest reasons of fish deaths are family covering for ya and overfeeding. I assume the O is only a few months old and although maybe fine for now, will need a 75g tank sooner rather then later. You mention filtration could be better, what filtration is on it right now? External filter?

He should be able to go for two weeks without eating.
