might need to do it for a while, will it do much harm given that its a well established tank 15g with community fish? I've got a DIY filter in the main tank

You can get by with it if you have plenty of aeration, and do 50% to 75% water changes daily. You would be running it similar to a med tank using antibiotics that wipe out nitrifying bacteria.

Is there any particular reason why you want to do this? If you are short on equipment & cash post what you do have & I might be able to help you jury rig your way through this.

If you have an air pump, check this out; http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=85297

There are sponge filters like the DIY Tolak linked to or pre-made kind that can work off an air pump. I have some Azoo sponge filters running back up on one of my tanks and it came in handy when the primary filter died before I could replace it.

I didnt explain myself properly oops, i've got that DIY filter running with some sponge/gravel/carbon from my old tank :) I've got a panda corydoras breeding tank with the main filter in as they need cleaner water

Half of my filters are DIY, I make better sponge filters than are commercially made, and cheaper too. If it's designed & built properly it should run for quite a while.
