i went to my friends house this morning, hadnt seen her in ages probably about 4 years, anyway her coldwater tank is still there, and all the inhibitants look happy and healthy, but i couldnt believe it,she had a large golden nugget plec swimming around in there with the orandas and goldfish, and corys she said theyve been in there about 3 and a half years, how are these tropical fish living so well for so long in a coldwater tank,

A coldwater tank is actually not that cold. Goldfish aren't true coldwater fish. True coldwater fish like sterlets will die of stress in temperarures much over 60 degrees. However goldfish are normally kept around 68-72 degrees. This is a fine low end temperature for many tropical fish. Plecos tend to be fairly hardy, and cories are extremely adaptative. This doesn't suprise me.
