i switched my 3 tanks to planted tanks a few months ago. they all have a layer of flourite with pool filter sand on top. yes, i know the flourite will come to the top, not much has, and i like the look.

the 10 gal with a 14/15 watt flourescent is fine.
the 10 gal with 2 of those "swirly" lightbulbs designed for household lights (i think 28 watts total) is fine

the 20 gal with a 55 watt power compact (6500K) stinks.
swords are doing okay,
hygrophilia polysperma a little less than okay,
java moss was bad for a while but has improved in the last few weeks,
java fern and anubias are doing well as long as they are off to the side of the
tank. the anubias even flowered i think!
my cryps had a tough start, but now seem to be okay.
the vals i have have almost all died! there are some very short leaves left, and
some new growth, but it's pretty sad looking

i am totally new to plants and odered 2 different packages, so i am not completely sure which plants are which. i think i have a good idea though. i still have the packing slips somewhere if anyone needs more info about the plants.

anyways, back to my question. i have some brown and green algae in the tank. i try to break up the light time, especially since room temp has really risen here in the last few weeks. i try to do several hour in the AM and then at night when it is cooler.

do i NEED CO2, more plants, more/less light? any tips are greatly appreciated!

thanks for reading my ramble!

I think you should really read gf225s pinned article at the top of this page about algae control, he pretty well describes your situation in detail, and its a good article anyway a must read if your a beginner at planted tanks, but i think you will find the answer there.
