I'm going to be making my own betta tank, but I dont want to have a hood or top. If I were to make the tank 8"wide and 8" deep and 12 inches tall, but only filled it to 8", so the waterline's at 8", would the betta (one male) be able to jump out? Thats 4", so... :dunno:

I wouldn't put a betta in anything w/out a lid, actually - even if it meant he'd have to jump 8 inches to get out. Really. ;)

If I may be so bold to ask , why no lid ,top or hood  ??. Seems to me the cover would keep the surface air warmer , moister , not to mention keep your betta in the tank.

I probably will have a hood/lid. I like how a glass tank with no ugly black trim or cheap hood looks better than one with those things... thats why Im making my own tank. The reason I ask is that when I make the tank, it'll have raw glass edges, and I have no idea what to use for a hood, as there's no lip or plastic groove to set the hood inside of to prevent it from moving around. If I were to just cut a piece of glass or plexiglass and set it on top, it might suffocate the betta (since if I had a lid i'd fill that tank all the way up). So, what do you guys suggest.

I might just buy a normal 2.5 gallon tank for $8 and buy a piece of glass with a hole for air, and be done with it, but I may not. Please reply, and tell me what you think.
