There was a plastic frame which would make a gap between the tank and the stand but my uncle reckons you need to fill this in with polystyrene or similar so there is no trapped air between the two (or something like that, can't remember exactly what he said).

Do you not then?

if you put polystyrene under a floating base tank it will crack! you only need polystyrene on tanks that are all glass on the bottom

Ah thanks that saved me some heartache. I was about to go on ebay and find some polystyrene tiles too.

The tank my uncle has is some good few years old now so maybe things have come on since then. I will let him know what you said.

If you are looking to spend upto £100 on an external filter, then have a look at the eheim classic range, probably a 2217 is the closest to your requirements for the budget.
