If you mean taking out the debris, then just siphon over the grass. All the waste will be siphoned out.

This is one of the main reasons that carpet plants need good flow, they're difficult to keep clean if they don't have very good circulation. So yes, syphon and mechanical cleaning and then see if you can get the flow keeping it that way.
