How Do You Write Scientific Names For Hybrids?

I wonder what you do when you don't know the crossings...? I have a syno and I've stumped many people as to what it could possibly be. Would that be Synodontis sp.?

Synodontis sp. idontknowius

Just playing,

yeah that's right chibi

synodontius sp. means he's a syno of unknown species.

mine i think is part euruptus and part something else (although i'm not sure) if i am correct then he is syndontis euruptus x synodontis sp

Hi,

There is some good info on wikipedia firstly on scientific nomenclature in general:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_nomenclature

And, also more specifically on hybrid nomenclature:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_name

I know wiki is much maligned these days however, I believe this to be pretty accurate. The abbreviation cf. (explained fully if you sift through the info in the link), is extremely useful.

In addition I also recall, from those dim and distant days of Uni, another useful abbreviation similar to aff., affin. or affinis. (or something along those lines, at any rate) although unfortunately, I can't find any reference to it now. This is derived from the latin affinitas, meaning literally "connection by marriage" (from which we get the word affinity BTW), in this case meaning approximately: "Shows a close resemblance."

Hope this helps... :D
