We have 3 Dalmation Mollies (which I discovered thanks to your WONDERFUL forum so thank you VERY much). The only female just had fry (which we apparently missed because we had NO clue what we were doing - AGAIN, until I found this forum - I'll be better prepared next time). Anyway, we have ONE survivor - lucky little devil. My question is, how will I know what the sex of this one is and how long do I have to wait to find out? How long do I keep this tiny little thing isolated from the community tank? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. My husband grew up with fish, I did not so it is a HUGE learning experience for me. And he's never had any that were livebearers so he's in a whole new world here too! Thanks so much! ~Eva~

The method of sexing any poecillid livebearer (in other words, all the common ones such as platies, guppies, mollies, swordtails, endlers, as well as a number of rarer ones) is the same - the male has the spiky anal fin, the female has a more orthodox shaped anal fin - see the diagram further up.

With mollies, you would have to wait a couple of months before the gender becomes obvious.

Keep the baby isolated until it's too big to fit in the mouth of any of your other fish (including the mollies).

right... iv looked in the tank of 40 guppies odd.. and noticed that all the males were redish and all the females were white (still had patterns on there tail's)

does this sound right? is the red colour carried on the X chromozone?

female guppies tend to be more plain in colour and bigger in size than a male they tend to be slender and usually brighter in colour, but you do have to go on the anal fin for definate sexing

i was. its just its in every guppie all the red ones are male all the yellow ones are female... it seemed a little wierd
