I am leaving for college next semester and the new dorm is roughly the size of a shoebox. Felix, my little crowntail, is used to living in a ten gallon tank and I just don't have the room for it. I now have to find a new home for him and Murrey the sucker fish. Anyone here have experience with rehoming fish?

Ask around. Maybe parents, brother, sisters, friends want a betta. Or you could always downgrade him to a 2 gallon or something to fit your dorm size. Just ask around, let people know you are selling/giving away the betta. Show beatiful pictures etc... It should be considerably easy to re-home a betta. Unless you aer asking an outrageous amount of money or something...

Depending where you are located, try posting on the Buy, Sell or Swap section of this forum. You may be able to ship if willing or find a local person who may want your fish.

Congratulations! :- What are you majoring in?

My boyfriend and I both managed to breed bettas and guppies in our shoebox-sized dorm rooms. Just imagine betta jars stacked under the bed...

You could just rehome Murrey (a local fish store would probably take him) and put Felix in a smaller tank. 2.5 gallon tanks aren't too expensive and are large enough for a small heater. We even put small sponge filters in ours. 2.5 gallons is still pretty generous for a betta and I bet he would adjust to it more easily than you would think.

If you still want to rehome him, like monica said, just ask around. It's really not hard to rehome a betta, especially a neat one like a crowntail. If you can wait until you move into the dorms, put up a flyer on a dorm bulletin board. Bettas are pretty popular in dorms since you can usually only have fish.

I had a ten gallon in my dorm for a semester. It wasn't too bad, and when people came in they always said "ooooohhh look at the fishtank!" But yeah, you should keep your betta. Get him a 5 gallon maybe? I really didn't start keeping fish until I went away to school and missed having my dogs around. My fish have been great company and a good outlet when you're sick of studying. Good luck in school! Its great fun, you'll love it!
