I've got rufus on a course of this as the little black spot on his tail spread a little and started to look curly. I'm on day 5 today (the end of the course on the bottle) and nothing seems to have changed. How do I know if it's worked or not?
:thanks:

If it hasn't gone, do a second course. The black should dissapear and disintegration stop.

are you certain that it is finrot...as there is no change and you say "started to go curly" this makes me think that it is coloration. some bettas have dark edging to their fin/s and it is not uncommon to see their fins curl (one of my boys is kind of exactly as you describe, but now with MORE dark and curls then when it started).
is it possible to put up a pic? would be best for others to see this "spot" and tell you if it's normal coloration or something more sinister,
i would not treat again unless he seems to be getting worse. just keep clean water and a close eye. make SURE you know that the coloration is in fact finrot, otherwise you are unnecessarily exposing your fish and the environment to antibacterial meds. it is this sort of action that leads to very resistant strains of beaties!
all the best

Well, the black area had stayed the same for the 3 weeks I'd had him, then overnight it got about twice as big and got this crinkly appearance. I tried to get a shot last night, but it's so hard 'cos he's in a bowl. I'll have another go.
Here's a shot of what it looked like before link

does there appear to be any actual fin LOSS? to me it honestly looks like his coloration from that link. he has black edging to his scales and it looks like it is his normal coloration. as for the crinkly appearance, it is more and more common to see in bettas these days. from genetics or some sort of previous injury(which in this case i think is NOT the cause...he is very healthy looking).
i would stop treatment after the first course is finished, keep up with water changes and watch...if you notice actual LOSS of fin tissue then start round two or try another med. honestly he looks great and i think it is just normal coloration.
cheers

Yes, there is loss from the very tip of the tail. Here are the best shots I could get of it

Any thoughts on this? More of the black has dropped off now. I didn't start the 2nd course of myxazin, but I'm dosing melafix now.
Really struggling to keep on top of water quality-god knows what's happening with the cycle and ammonia is up to 0.25 every day :(
:thanks:

Ok.. everytime I've seen fin rot the edges have been black and following that has been grey. Are those full black bits coming off, yeah? Are his fins and ventrils clamped together?

You'll need to start a second course of Myxazin. Melafix is just a healing agent, it helps prevent infection but won't cure it.

As for the ammonia levels, what is the NitrIte?

Regular water changes, try and do 25-50% depending on the size of his tank.

Melafix does treat bacterial infections as well as acting as a healing agent.

To be honest though, that black looks a lot like normal coloration to me as well.

You mentioned ammonia, could this be ammonia burns? No point in shoving in lots of meds if it's not an infection.

Thanks for the replies :)
Most of the black has dropped off leaving a little notch in the end of the tail, but there's still some black there.
The ammonia has never gone above 0.5 and that was only once for less than a day. I don't know if I've done something with the myzaxin but my filter bacteria seem shot :( They're the same in the other tank though, which I didn't dose , so ???
Nitrites are at 0, presumably as there's no ammonia being processed!

Here's an up to date pic

As you can see, there is the bit missing with some black still round it, and a split a bit further up too.
Do you think it's healing time (ie melafix) or does it still need the myxazin?
Thanks for any opinions :)
