How Do You Induce Plant Growth?

i bought some new plants a while ago and some of the smaller chunks of roots have fallen off. so i put them in a glass of water , hoping to some day do something with them if they grew. so now they have some leaves and they rang in size for 1cm-3cm but the thing is the root chunks were soo small that they only grew 1-2 leaves on each chunk. so i was hopinh there was some trick to making the roots grow because they seem like they haven't... i want them to grow so i can tangle all of the small chunks together and then, once it's solid, elastic it to a rock or peice of wood and just let it grow. thanks for the help here. any ideas are welcome!

well whenever i have bits of plant that have come loose or something, i jus leave it floating in the top of the tank near the lights and after a couple of days i normally have roots and you can see them trying to get to the bottom of the tank.

obviously there no where near, only a couple of inches long, if that.

but i find if i plant them after this then they do fine.
