Hi
Just wondered how people house their male juvi's when the fry are old enough to seperate?

Little tanks, jars, divided tanks etc........

If you use jars, and are not in a humid country, how do you keep them warm?

Cheers

i use Mason jars from the range or benie boxes

Hi
Do you heat them in any way?
What we intend to do is; found some heavy duty 1kg plastic jars and have tested them out on a reptile heat mat. It holds the water at a steady 76 degrees. We can fit upto 27 jars on a single mat, so it works out to be an economical way of heating too :good:

i don't heat them, my room is always very warm so i never bother. The heat mat idea has been bought up a few times, i think it is a good idea if it keeps the temp right

I have been frantically saving up fizzy drink and other plastic bottles for when mine are ready...any time now.

I have a 4' x 15 x 18 tank which will be filled with 6" of water, a filter and heater added and holes drilled in the bottles. Should be able to get 40 odd bottles in there !!!

The way I used to do it was to use small jam or mason jars. I'd put the fish into the jar and place about 6 of the jars into an old 6pack beer bottle box (with the cardboard so they couldn't see eachother), then I'd put some towels underneath them and place those hand warm pouches into the bottom. Aswell I used to use hot water bags wrapped in towels.

OMG Andy....with 170 fry you'll be ready to explode after all those fizzy drinks    Good idea though......keep us up to date on how it works....will be really interested to hear and see :good:

Thanks Netty....i've already started sorting out my girlie babies...i moved 6 "potential" females in with the big girls today and immediately fed them. After a few minutes of "who the **** are you ?" and "what are you doing in with us big girls", they've all seemed to settle down really well.

I've got 4 spare tanks at the moment so room shouldn't be a problem

Oh....170 was the first lot (probably down to about 150 now) but i have a similar amount from my second spawning....now 7 weeks old

Andy

I put a row of 2 litre beanies in a big tank with heater and filter to circulate it all, it kept the temp stable in them but found i was having to do at least 2 sometimes 3 100% water changes everyday. (Ammonia)
In the end i divided the tank. Easier for me with only 5 fry, could be a problem with hundreds of the little boogers though !!!

Thanks everyone for your info. We've got a load of large plastic fruit jars (about 20 so far) they've been emptied and all the fruit is in the freezer now......better start baking  We've also picked up a large reptile heat mat and it is keeping the temp at a constant 78/79f. They are in the pantry that we just cleared out and Bronzecat has put in a light as we have to keep the door shut (2 cats) But it seems to be working really well :D :D
