Hi everybody how do I get my 1 day old fry to eat I have put food in there 3 times today and no nibbles or anything and is it normal for them to bury themselves in the gravel ?

what kind of fry? Try feeding them tomorrow they usually don't eat the first day. Yes they are trying to hide. Are they in a tank by themselves? If they are they will stay out....

Hey,

Make sure that they are able to find the food easily, and that it is very tiny, like a fine powder. What I do is put some flakes into a small bag, and crush that up as much as possible. They will not eat anything that will not fit into there mouths easily (if they spit it back out then it is still to big for the fry to swallow). Also what I do is keep my fry in a breeding net for the first 3-4 days to make sure that they are able to find food easily, also so I can clean up the extras without any trouble.

If they are in a big tank with other fish, they are trying to hide in the gravel, if they are in there own tank then I am not certain waht they are doing. I keep my fry in a 5 and 10 gallon bare bottom tanks so I have not experienced this myself.

Also, if they are in a big tank, they may not be eating because it mgiht be hard for them to find or see the food. My fry also love baby brine shrimp (i just use the frozen stuff).

Good luck with your new fry, I'm sure they will start eating.

They are platy fry (black and yellow) not sure what those are called , butt they are in a 5 gallon tank by there selves with plants and stones there are plenty of places to hide and when I have seen them out that is when I was putting the food in do you feed the brine shrimp the same way as the other food? and what do I need to do different so they will eat or just be patient..............? :S

I have never had any platty fry myself, only guppies and swordtails and they always seem to eat right away for me.

When you place the food in the tank do they swim up to the food and ignore it or do they just not pay attetion to it all together?

My guppies will pick at algie that I let grow on the back of their tanks, so if you have any rocks or things from other tanks that have algae growing on it then you could try and put it in there, they may pick away at it.

When I feed them the baby brine shrimp they just seem to find it themselves, I do nothing special. I have an apple snail in each of my fry tanks so he can clean up the majority of the extra/un eaten food in the tanks.

My guppy fry are always skimming the top so it's easy to feed them. They will start eating don't worry 5gal is small enough for them to notice food. Even tho I don't think tank size matters.

the little fry pay no attention what so ever to the food they keep going about there own business as if I hadn't even put any food in there and I put some stones with algae on them from the other tank so maybe they will feast on that any other suggestions I need all the help I can get...................??????????? :S

I feed my fry crushed flakes. I use a mortar and pestal to crush the flakes as fine as dust. I give them some baby brine shrimp once or twice a week, sometimes more if I have the time to hatch them. The food you are feeding them must be as fine a dust for the first few weeks or they can't eat it.
I have also had fry in the main tank I didn't know about and somehow they found something to eat. I even have a 5 week old platy fry in the birthing tank that somehow was missed when the other fry were moved to a grow out tank. I didn't feed that tank for almost a week and suddenly there was a 5 week old fry in there.
If the food is small enogh I wouldn't worry about it too much, they seem to find a way to survive.

Try feeding the some powdered fry foods like "first bites" by hikari or "TetraMinfry" or maybe some liquid fry foods like Liquifry no.1; all these foods are very nutritious and easy to eat for fry.
