I've been keeping fishes for quite a while now and have gone from a 10 gal about 10 years ago to a 36 gal that until recently has been up and running for 1.5 years without any trouble, I've done a lot of reading and research. Anyways, my father-in-law just got into the hobby and got a 125 gal tank, and has asked me for advice, I basicly tried to get him to cycle his tank properly and directed him to all the right equipment, but here's the problem, he goes to the LFS a lot, 3 - 4 times a week and talks to the guys at the stores for advice, most of which is bad, and within a month of setting up his tank, which still has very high readings of amonia, nitrites and nitrates, he now has roughly 35 South African cichlids, mostly Malawais. His water is horribly clouded but he refuses to listen to me and instead keeps buying garbage that these guys at the LFS keep pushing onto him. So right now he has an Aquaclear 70 and a Rena XP4 running and the guys at the LFS talked him into getting a powerhead to clear up the water, anyone run into this problem before and know anyways to either fix his tank or get him to listen? Cause right now the only way I think he will listen to my advice is if all his fishes die.
Just kinda had to vent a bit.
