How Do You Cylcle An Lfs

You couldn't help me out with "whats at the end of the universe?" could you Ian?

Cheers

Depending how you mean END. if you rman whats at the edge of the universe....
The theory is, Its a great big cloud of expanding matter. rolling out beyond that Nothing complete and total vacum

If you mean how will the universe end?
Isac newtons theory is that every atom of matter acts upon very other atom, the greater the mass the greater the pull, so eventualy the mass withinn the expanding could of matter will be greater than the cloud its self, and so pull it back in causing a massive implosion.....

And yes that book is at my mums along with "the theory of everything" another good book

Back when I slid in to the fishroom at Petco all they had was a sump with bio balls, a UV system (double tube rated about 1200-ish?). For the marine just add a four foot old school protien skimmer. Pretty low tech even back in the mid '90's (then a little later got a fluidized sand bed. Yeah that'll solve everything  ). A few times there was some incidents where flea shampoo was thrown in to the system for "fun" :good: . Few times it didn't go through out the whole system so the sump was drained and refilled until it stopped sudsing up. drained the affected tanks and re-filled it.

Most of the time there were gallons of Nova-Qua and Am-Quel so I doubt the systems never really cycled fully with all the volumes of water being removed and filled (daily/weekly) even without the help of some shampoo happy yutzes.

So, if asked today "How Do You Cylcle An LFS" I'd have to say they don't if they're all on a central system (I'm refering to "Pets in a Box" places).

And i thought i was the one that had to get out more.. :) just kidding..

I`ve always been told i think to much......

Oh well, you should see me after a couple of cold ones and i realy get into some philosophical debate

Babies are infact super intellegent but just lack the ability to communicate it, then when they get a bit older they are distracted by stuff like kids tv with people prancing around talking silly and end up forgetting all the amazing stuff they know like how to cure cancer. Thats my theory and im sticking to it. Also, can the human mind get full? Like it cant be infinate, what if i try and remember loads of stuff all day. Like if it gets full will it start deleting old stuff? Is that what happens with old people when they go senile? its just deleting stuff? I think the cycling is done by special water fairies also. Dont hold me to it though as its not 100% fact but im about 97% sure :D

water fairies.. hehe pffffft.

Yes it does delete stuff, and also files stuff away. for instance if you go to learn fly fishing you will need to train your right arm to flick the rod in just the right way. to begin with you need to think about it alot, then over time it becomes second nature. and bascily the cels that were used to think about the skill are then freed up for learning new skills and the brain then maps the movemnts needed to flick the rod lower down within the brain...

That's very true - just think about driving (those of us who have been doing it for a while ....). There are times when I'm on autopilot and end up going the way I normally go - instead of the way I should be going! (It's not just me I 'm sure  ) That's your brain conserving space, obviously.

Actually one of my lfs's uses rain water - they collect it and leave it to stand in a huge tank (as in metal) before it goes in the tanks (as in fish).

I worked at Maidenhead Aquatics for a bit on work experience, and as far as i know they dont dechlorinated the water. However they did do water changes .. big ones..Which as far as i saw consisted of pushing a few buttons.

EDIT: Apparently the UV does something to the chlorine.

i wish i could do water changes by pushing a button.

yay an excuse to go off on a ramble.

I think that at the edge of the universe is the edge of another universe. Think about galaxies. I bet we used to think our galaxy was the universe. Then we discovered more galaxies and we named this big clump of galaxies a universe.

Babies probably think in emotions and pictures. Or perhaps they don't really think at all. Perhaps when they're hungry they cry. They don't know why. It's like an involuntary reaction to a given stimulus.

What other questions did you ask... oh the LFS thing. I personally have no Idea. Considering the emphasis they put on cycling tanks when talking to customers they probably don't cycle at all. Just buy the set up (set it up) throw in some fish and start selling.

The 100% water change every 24 hours seems a bit extreme to me. I'd hate to pay that water bill.

Babies cry because they have so much important knowledge about the world but they cant express it through the medium of speech, they could write novels if only there tiny hands were developed enough...such is life.

Ok here is the official answer. The Maidenhead Aquatics system has been developed over 27 years with constant experimentation and improvements taking place. Depending as to the age of the system the setup will vary. Systems more than four years old are generally filtered with sand filters and trickle filters. Newer systems are generally filtered with bubble beads and these provide biological and mechanical filtration in one unit. All systems are fitted with large banks of uv's. Many systems will also have ozonisers and marine systems will commonly have denitrifiers.

Maturing bubble bead filters can take a very long time and so the store at Farnam has add large pond filters to the system as well. Filter bacteria actually life within the biofloc which attaches itself to filter media, rather than on the media itself. When bubble bead filters are back-washed much of this floc is lost and this is why they take a long time to mature. However once mature they give excellent clarity and water quality. The pond filters mature much faster and will remain on the system until the manager is completely happy that the bubble bead will cope by itself. In the case of Farnam Nitra-spira was added to the system to speed maturation.

Water changing the system is very simple. By turning a few valves and flicking a few switches the water flow from the filter is reversed and the dirty water is flushed to waste. In order to maintain water quality (low nitrates) daily water changes are required. The volume of water changed will vary from system to system depending on system age, stocking density and local water quality. The majority of our stores will dechlorinate there water as it is automatically topped up. Some use chemicals like aquaplus and some use in-line dechlorinators. Many of are systems are soft water provided from large 650gpd RO units and these do not require dechlorination as the carbon pre-filter on the RO unit does this in order to protect the membrane.

If you would like to know more about your local shops filtration system, please ask the staff in store.
