strictly speaking you are not allowed to trade on ebay :grr: :hyper:

Well people choose to spend their money on different things, say insted of buying a big house or a flashy car they'd spend their money on fish keeping.

Start off with one tank and learn the ins and outs of fishkeeping in your own way. Make friends with other fish keepers around you and you can then start swaping and trading stuff in your own little group. That takes alot of the cost out of the hobby :)

when you're that bit younger you want everything 'now' (not getting at you, we were mostly all the same when that age ;) i know i was ) so don't worry about not being able to get multiple tanks for now, you've got plenty time to build up a collection of tanks / fish over the coming years. as for how people afford it, as has been said we all have different priorities when it comes to spending cash e.g. you maybe spend all your spare cash on fish stuff whereas your mate maybe spends all his / hers on PS2 games, different strokes for different folks or whatever the saying is.

There is no reason you can't start now, seems like you already have. :) Try finding a local aquatics club, older guys give stuff away. Build as much of your equipment as you can, stands and tops are cheap to build. Buy used equipment, used gear goes for pennies on the dollar. Anything you can't buy used, buy online, it's around half the lfs price. Research what sells in your area, and once you have a few tanks, start breeding. Fish pay for more gear, my fishroom is nearly self-sustaining.

One of the local lfs owners started in his basement in his early teens. He would go to the junkyard & rip out old refrigerator liners. Seal them up, set them up on anything, and you have a cheap tank. He filled his parent's basement with these, & was selling enough fish in his early 20's to open up his own shop. His shop is now known for being the place to buy & sell cichlids, as well as having the best prices on tanks.

You can always join a local Freecycle group. There is one where you live. People offer things they don't want anymore or ask for things they need. All free. You just say you're interested and if you're first in line they will contact you with details. My group had 3 offers of free tanks this week alone.

I afford it by having no social life what so ever :( my life consists of going to work, eating, feeding the fish and sleaping, and when i'm not doing any of those things im either on here or at the supermarket or LFS. I dont have foreign holidays, i dont own a car and i dont do anything else that costs money if i can help it.

you build it up bit by bit. you buy one tank with one filter then you upgrade the filter. and the lights, then you see a cheap tank, and bang the old filter and lights on that and hey presto the cycle of MTS starts
