How Do You Afford...

Hmm, it depends really for me- i guess its more of a matter of what i don't do now days;
a. In the past i just used to buy small tanks all the time(5 to 20gals sort of thing), and when i upgraded tanks i never used to get many more gallons- in the end i just ended up with alot of small tanks with not many stocking posibiltys that were a pain in the bum to clean out.
b. I have bought a couple of second hand tanks in the past but they either leaked or i had to spend hours removing built on layers of rock hard limescale and algae from them. When i bought my old 50gal i just bought the tank alone and then bought all the accessorys for it like lighting, filtration and heating etc- the tank was a very good tank but it took weeks to get all the gear together, which was a disapointment and a pain.
c. Now days i just buy brand new tanks, for the last year and a half i have been saving up money for some large brand new all-in-one tanks and have got my first one about 2months ago(125 UK gal, 2 more to go), i wouldn't buy a second hand 125gal because it would be very difficult and not that much cheaper to find lighting and filtration in particular- i also wouldn't want to get a second hand one in the fear it would leak or crack, not to mention how difficult it could be to find a nice stand that goes with it too.
Second hand and separate tanks are great if you are only looking for somthing up to 30gals or so because its easy to find lighting, filtration and heating for them plus spare glass paines or sealant to fix them if they need to be repaired, but its a different situation if you are going for 50gals+ in my opinion.
d. I also saved alot of money by waiting so long to get my 125gal, there were many, many times when i was tempted to buy somthing smaller than a 125gal but larger than my old tanks, it helps alot if you just set up a pet bank account- put £20-30's a month in it to pay for fish stuff and other pet accesorys and nothing else and its helps you save up alot for things like new fish tanks  .

I didn't get a fancy setup tank, and it took me forever to get my ugly little things set up.

My 10g was inherited, sort of. I've had it since at least 1995. The hood, the same. The heater I looted from a nice old man who is dying of... I think it's heart disease, he had 2 fully equpit, empty tanks in his garage he was never going to use, and his daughter gave me permission to take what I wished from his supplies in there -- since his time on earth was limited. Each plant I have in the tank was around $12 each, and I think I have something like.... eight plants in there. The sand was $17 for 100lbs (took care of at least 3 tanks with tha bag), and the bogwood was $25. The frogs were $4 each and the betta was $7 (female). The ottos were around $13 TOTAL (not each, horrible typo, apologies extended), and only one remains.

How did I do it? I did it the most painful way possible... a little at a time. $4 here, $4 there. It was long, awful, and didn't resemble instant satifaction in the slightest. Each little step was a horrible struggle in finance and effort. But whoa, nelly, it felt great when I was done. And not only that, since I'm the type that researches until death, I know so much about my fish I'm annoying. :) Bonus!

Alright, on my 10G's I spent about $75 each complete set-up, minus the fish.
wow, thats most expensive 10 g ive ever heard of. i pay a round 30 dollars for mine second hand, perfectly fine condition.

Second hand kicks ass.

$40 for just the tank where I'm at, minus the hood and the 'accessories', here. Definately minus the fish. The world's different, all over.

I know the feeling about researching to the death, been compiling stocking lists, reviewing, recompiling, reviewing over and over and over since the start of November when I decided to do this. Itll be probably after the new year till i finally stock (part due to the lovely speed (read sarcasm) of my fishless cycle) so till then i while away the time dreaming of my fish etc and what ones im getting, reading everything i can find on them.

Yeah. fishforums.net is a fantastic haven for researchers, too.

There are sooo many times when people look at me, squinty, and go, "They're JUST FISH, you know?"

Well, duh. Yes, I know they're "just fish". But there's a difference in buying 'pretty fish' and slopping them into a tank you happen to own... and purchasing fish who will flourish in an atmosphere you create, and a different sense of satisfaction, as well, in the careful construction of these atmospheres, wether you're in it for the fish or the scenery.

I just waste all my money on fish and stuff related to the hobby.
Who cares what it costs. If I aint got the money I can have what I want.
As for credit cards, if the lenders are mug enough to give me free money then thats there problem. Ill pay them back £1 amonth for rest of me life. Still plenty more lenders who do the same. Its great, lots of free money.

Who's gonna pay for your funeral if you just spend money you don't have your whole life? What if you have kids and they inherit your debts and can't live their lives as they should? Plus a hundred other issues i could point out with your theory...Don't mean to sound harsh, but if thats advice you are giving, geez... :| .

OK let's get back to topic :/.....

If I have spare money then I will get more things but only as and when I need them.
