Did you give them away deliberatley knowing that the female was pregnant - or did you just do it to be generous?

I have the same problem. With guppies, they look "empty" after giving birth, but with my platies, it seemed like the gravid spot was still rather big afterwards, I had a hard time telling which of my females gave birth. And weird thing is, my male looks like it has a gravid spot as well, but it definitely has a gonopodium.

Hi

What does a gravid spot look like? I don't suppose anyone's got a picture have they? :)

I guess the smarta## answer would be that they are finished when the babies stop comming out. I had a platy give birth to 75 fry over a period of like 6hrs. They came out anywhere from 1 to 4 at a time. And often there would be a several minutes of none in between the groups. I've never seen them take more than a day to give birth.

The gravid spot is a darkened area at the rear of the belly on the sides near the anal fin. Look at the black spot on the guppy in the picture at this link: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=13664
