ive had 3 females and a male for 2 weeks now and there are no fry about the tank or any sign of them anywya. Is there any way of telling how pregnant they are do they have a gravid spot like swordies and guppies? any hepl appreciated

yep they have a gravid spot like all live bearers and if you have had them for 2 weeks they will probly be pregnant.they tend to get very fat as well.

It's harder to see the gravid spot on Platies, since they tend to have brighter colors. You most likely will not see the same blackish spot. Depending on the color, it might be reddish, or orangish, or yellowish. And some Platies have markings over the gravid area so it's near impossible to see.

The best indicator to go by is how fat they are. And if you have a male in the tank, there's a 99% chance they are pregnant. :)

ye it is kinda hard they are black and orange marbled and one of the females is just plain orange. they don't seem overly fat and i cant see any gravid spot on the plain one biut one of my marbled is quite fat

I have an orange Hi-fin, and it's near impossible to see her gravid spot until you can actually see the fry's eyes. Even then it can be hard to see. The best indicator is how fat they are. I've never really looked at gravid spots much on my Platies, I just judge by the fatness. :)

Hey, I have platies too. Mine if pregnant right now, and I can tell by how fat she is. She'll probably give birth in like 2 weeks or so. I'm not sure if what I see is a gravid spot though. But whatever, I wont hijack your thread.

Like Anna said, if there's a male in there, she's most likely pregnant.

i had a couple platies a while ago..two males and one female...i noticed the female was really really fat one day and i couldn't figure it out...then a couple days later she was really thin and died. I never saw any fry though...they were probably eaten!
