I need to treat for ich but my filters are prepackaged with the carbon already in them so I wanted to know if anyone knew what to do about removing the carbon. Thanks in advance!

Which filter have you got? Is the carbon in pad or granlue form?

If you have the single pad form you wont have any sort of way to filter the water. You will just have a water flow. Best thing to do is to setup a quarantine tank with a sponge filter of about 10 gallons if you can spare the room. Its the most effective way to cure the fish and not having to medicate your main system. Should not cost you more than 30 dollars to setup.

I only have one aquarium so should I just buy a sponge filter and use that in the place of the carbon containing pad while I'm treating?

but that would mean turning off the main filter for a considerable length of time and risks killing the bacteria colony that lives there.

Do you know the make of the filter? Some that come with carbon filter pads also have a foam pad behind them, thus is you remove the carbon pad there is still some mechanical and biological filtration present.

The maker is aqueon, what if I got just a pad made of filter floss and put it in there?
