I've heard that you can grow your own algae but I am unsure on what's the best method. From what I read I think the easiest way it to put stones/rocks in a jar of water, screw on a lid and leave it out in the sun for a few days.

Is this right? Should I be doing more? Should I add water from the tank to the jar rather than clean water?

Any advice would be great.

just do what you say, add tap water as it doesnt contain any bacteria which help to keep algae at bay, particulalry diatoms (brown algae)

bit of a cost just to grow algae!

you could just dose an imbalance of nutrients which would be cheper. Take a look in the algae guide in my sig, it tells you how they are caused.

Thanks for the advice. I prefer the idea of not growing the algae in the tank just in case it gets out of hand. Much better to add the algae on the rocks as and when needed IMO
