Hi all,
I got an eheim external canister filter with this 4ft tank & as yet it's still in the cupboard as i don't seem to be able to get it working, Now i'm not sure which model it is but its got some round bead/ball type things in the bottom followed by 2 layers of sponge & some " fluff " looking stuff.
There is a bar which i've found out lies horizontal along the surface of water & the other tube downwards into the tank, But do i just suck one of the pipes til water flows ? If so which? The filter is currently empty of water & i have no instructions with it.

Can anyone help, i really want to get it working instead of sitting useless in the cupboard.

Thanks

if the cannister holes in the cannister isclosest to you im sure its the hole on the right hand side you suck on hope it helps im just going on memory! :good:

surely it says what filter it is on the filter ??

If there is no priming button then you will need to fill the canister and then suck on the outlet tube until the filter starts pumping water through

Ok that went waaay over my head lol

There are loads of numbers on the top so not sure which is for what, I've had a look at it when i cleaned the media but i found no buttons or similar, ok i'll see what i can do. Doubt i'm gonna get it working i don't seem exactly fab with externals .

ok put the lid on leave one hose in the water and suck on the other until you can see water halfway along the hose plug the filter in and turn on and it should start if not repeat the process with the other hose! :good:

Right i've got it going, there is no power or force to the water coming back out though would that be because it's cheap or something?
It comes back out like a little faster than trickling, Is that as much as it's gonna be as i can't see that keeping the tank clean. Hard to describe the flow coming back out really. I'm going to leave the fluval 3 in though . :)

Sounds like a "Classic" model. Sounds like you have it primed and running now, but lack of flow could be anything from blockages to air-locks. How noisy is the filter? Can you post a picture of it and the bit with all the numbers on?

All the best

Hi ,

Its one of these (see link) but i don't know which , i'm just going to look at the filter numbers on top now to see if any match. There is a pipe at the back/bottom of the filter which sucks in, & then to the front of the filter at the top is the one putting the water back into the tank if that's what you mean.

If i turn off the fluval 3 & leave the eheim running the water flowing back into the tank is minimal, its on a sorta bar & it squirts out of about 6 or 7 holes along the bar which lies horizontal at the top of the water if that makes sense, Put when i took that bar off to see how fast the water was coming out it just feels not worth bothering with. I'd still need something extra for a current if you get me. So i've left the fluval 3 in so at least i know there is some filter working decently.

Eheim Classics, very good and reliable filters. Makes me wonder if it was sold incomplete, unless something obvious is wrong like an air-lock from a dodgy prime...

How noisy is the filter? If it's more than a gentle hum, what noise is it making. That may give a clue to the poor flow. A video or photo of the outlet can also let us see if it's normal

Cant get a piccy i can't get it out of cupboard without turning it off as the pipes don't reach & its to dark inside the cupboard, so list of numbers on top as follows .

Typ 2211010
pumpe 1211019
serie 05121
volt 230
hz 50
watt 5
H max 1.2
l/h 300

So i'm guessing its the cheaper one or maybe an older version? Does this help any?
The filter is fairly quiet with the cupboard door shut, every now & then it sorta makes a whiring noise & gets a fraction louder, sounds like its filling up then it goes back quiet. If its a cheap model that doesn't do much litre per hour would this alter the output flow? So more ltr pr hr mean faster flow ?

hey, What is the volume/dimensions of the tank?

tbh the filter only runs at 300lph, which really only makes it suitable for a 80-90L tank IMO
A 4ft tank is going to be more than this so added or alternative filtration will be required.

Try to aim for a turnover of 6 times the volume of your tank

if you shake the filter are any air bubbles released up into the tank? Also can you see the waterline in the actual cannister?

Hi the tank is 4ft long, 18" deep & 15" wide , I know the filter isn't enough on it's own which i was i was asking would it be enough with a fluval 3 aswell , or would 2 fluval 3's be better? ( haven't a clue on volume can't seem to work it out )

Can't see a water line on the filter no just looks full with water, & nope no bubbles . Should the beads in the bottom be moving about because they are just at the bottom no movement. Thanks for the help

tank is 212Litres, Fluval 3+ is rated for about 130L tanks so yes two would be ok, provided your not adding anything too large or messy, (common plecos etc..) personally think the cannister is going to be too small to be effective

Personally in anything over 180-200L you are much better going with a canister filter, A Tetratec EX1200 for example can be picked up for around £75 and because it has a prime function you can start the flow at literally the touch of a button.

Nothing in the canister should be moving too much, as the media should be fairly compact so that there is no way for the water to bypass the media
