Hi, I have a newt, and she has been in the same 20 gallon tank for 8 months now, and im going to move it into a smaller one, my question is, what should I use to clean the old tank with. I know ? have to buy a new screen for the filter, but what else should I clean it with?

Thanks,
Tyson.

Try using a diluted vinagar/water solution and some elbow grease. I would then sterilize it with near boiling water.

I would not normally suggest using Chlorox (chlorine bleach) to clean a tank, but in this case I'd make an exception.

After everything is completely scrubbed out, apply a mild solution of bleach diluted with cold water. Rinse repeatedly. Let air dry and then rinse very well again. You must be sure the bleach is all gone.

I would hesitate about using very hot water for fear of damaging the glue that holds the tank together or cracking the glass.

Chlorine is dangerous for fish, but I do regularly clean filters and other small items in this manner and have had no problems. It is just necessary to rinse and air dry to ensure that it is completely removed after use. A tank is big and harder to do, but it can be done.

A strong salt solution is always useful for cleaning fish tank parts, but do make sure to thoroughly soak and rinse the salt off before using.

If you use table salt for cleaning purposes, (which makes sense to do because it is much less expensive) be sure that it is not iodized. The addition of iodine to table salt is a good thing for humans but not for fish.
