How Deep Is Your Substrate?

Hi there,

I am trying to calculate how much substrate I need so I can decide which way to go (amazonia or DIY depending on cost) and need to know how deep everyone has their substrate.

mine is between 2 to 3 inches every where u should be fine with 2 though.

Depends on the situation. I get very good results with undemanding plants (Cryptocoryne, Hygrophila, Vallisneria, etc.) with a 3-5 cm depth of aquatic soil mixed with silica sand, topped off with 2-4 cm of silica sand or gravel depending on the size of the tank and what sort of fish are being kept.

But I've also created very deep sand beds for other types of aquaria and never had the (mythical, in my opinion) problem of "deadly gas build-up". So while there may be an optimum depth, to some degree experiment and find out what works best/looks best for you.

3 or 4" it was 2 or 3" but i had to top it up because the plant roots wernt burrying properly

it is entirely up to you, sloping it up to the back helps with getting a lyered look and a sense of depth/ build up of plants.

mine is 2" - 5"

Amen. I have had sand very deep in places, with rocks on the top and never had any problems.

If you want the best (in my limited opinion) get ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia. On a budget, go for inert sand.

Unfortunately, Llj is goosetepping around in her thigh length storm trooper boots , but if you rarrange report and barr in google, you should get a direct hit.
