Well, right now i'm debating when i get my 90 gallon, i should make it a cichlid tank, or a community tank. So i bought this book recently called Aquarim &Pond Fish By: David Alderton. An it has all these great proflies on Freshwater, Marine, Brackish and Coldwater fish. Now there is this some fish that caught my eye, a Xiphophorus montezumae, Anableps anableps, Xiphophorus birchmanni, Poecilla reticulata, and Poecilla forumosa. I found all these fish gourgeous. I used the scientific names so you guys can figure out what they are. But i just really love them. are most of these fish rare? Thank you.

Xiphophorus montezumae is become more and more popular...though not nearly as common as the normal Swordtail. You might be able to find it if you ordered online. Some stores might even be getting them in, occasionally...

Anableps anableps or the Four-eyed fish is pretty rare. I have never seen one in a store, or for sale online. Though I'm sure you could find one if you really wanted too. It might be wild caught though. And expensive.

Xiphophorus birchmanni is fairly rare. This is the Swordless Swordtail, correct? I've never seen one for sale anywhere...but once again, I'm sure you could find one if you looked hard enough and long enough.

Poecilla reticulata is EVERYWHERE. Also known as the Guppy. :p

Poecilla forumosa or the Amazon Molly isn't very common. I have seen them for sale online before...but never in stores. Pretty rare species.

Hope this helps.

Edit: So basically, to find any of these fish (except the Guppy) you'll need to do some work. Of course, if you do find any of them, you'll let all your friends in the Livebearer forum know, right? :*

lopuski- no one listens to you cause we all know by now you like insulting people and you probably are a whiney 10 year old. you probably don't know what they are, please tell me their common names. you and my signature is nice, one more insult i'll try to get you suspened or banned. you deserve it.

The montezuma swordtails (Xiphophorus montezumae) are exquisite. I've seen them one time at one of my lfs but that was a year ago and I didn't have room for any. You can usually find them on aquabid fairly regularly in the Livebearers Wild Types section. I've seen them in a blue/green variety as well as a mottled ivory.

Here's a link to a closed auction with a nice picture. This seller also breeds the Xiphophorus Birchmannis and sells them occasionally. Monty auction

now that fish has a long tail. thank you for showing me that, now if i can only find the four eyed fish. you are some much help than some other people i know *points at lopuski*

i'm sorry, did i say Poecilla reticulata? what i ment to say was Gambusia sexradiata

What are you looking for in the Four-eyed fish? A place to buy them, information...what?

well, the book does give quite a good description on the four eyed fish, but i would like more info. i was surprised when i saw they were live bearers. and i'm going to try to find a place to buy the four eyed fish. if i find a site. i'll post it.

oppositearmor - if you did manage to find some Four-Eyed Fish what size tank were you planning on keeping them in? I was just reading there are 3 species in the group. What one were you thinking of getting?

This place here near me http://www.akvarielagret.se/ has a huge floor tank set up with Four-eyed fish about 30 I'd say. They are at least 10-12 inches in length.

Next time I am there I'll try and get some pictures for you :D

Here's a pic I got off their website, you can't see the four-eyed fish well but you can see the tank they are in.

Yep, Four-eyes get to 12", and need a four foot tank. So they aren't small Livebearers.

Also, they are really really good jumpers, so keep the tank covered. I'd say a long tank would be best for them, as they don't need it very high.

And Wow, Elisabeth...that looks like a nice set-up. I can see the Four-eyed fish, all around the top.

I agree you need a really large tank if you want to keep some. They are awesome fish very friendly. Everytime I go there they follow me around the tank staring at me with their funny eyes

You see the tank sitting on the wall behind the four-eyed fish tank with the big rock in it? That's where they keep the fry. Last time I was there there were 2-3 inch fry in it. Cute things  They also have bigger fry in the big tank with the parents.
