i have 3 danios and 3 tetras and they wont breed. I have had them for about 6 months. Could it just be that I got stuck with all males or females. And how can I tell males from females of both species?

This article might help you. Danios are the easier to breed, so I would start with them. Still, you cannot just dump them in a tank and feed them, then expect them to sucessfully breed. You have to do some preparation first. You also have to remove the adults once the eggs are laid.

Neither Danios or particularly Tetras will breed in regular tapwater unless you are in a rare place. Water needs to be soft and acidic, in the case of some tetras, particularly so.

I think also both are species which are happier in larger numbers, so your small population size may also be a factor.

hmmm well i have 3 leopard danios, 1 x male, 3 x female
and have rather alot of eggs from them. i know the eggs are theirs
as i placed only the danios in a nursing tank.
following morning i have lots of eggs

anyway i have just regular tapwater have not added anything to it and am not in a soft water area

I want to breed my danios too! I started a thread a few days ago asking for some tips and advice but nobody is replying  I'm just doing loads of research online... I'm currently conditioning my danios, I have 4 female 1 male, hope it works because they are lovely little fish and I want them to breed so badly!

i just watched mine. when i saw the male circling and chasing a female,
i put them all in the nursing tank with nothing but plastic weed covering
the bottom (some prefer to use marbles or stones) that way the eggs drop
to the bottom an the parents cant get at them. when my females looked abit thinner,
(after leaving them together over night) i put them all back in the main tank.
have covered up the tank to keep it dark (as thats what i read to do)
am now just waiting and hoping the eggs will hatch

hope this helps and good luck :)
